A woman in the northern Bac Giang Province has been fined VND10 million ($434) for refusing to quarantine and barricading herself at home earlier this week.

The 44-year-old woman and her father, identified by authorities as having come into contact with a patient, had been told to make medical declarations and quarantine on May 26, but only the latter complied.

She refused, went up to the third floor of her house and locked the door.

It took officials five hours of persuasion using megaphones and a ladder truck to dispatch people to the third floor to talk to her. Finally, that night, they had to break the door open and take her to quarantine.

But the trouble continues for authorities.

Nguyen Hai Yen, people's committee chairman of the local Tran Nguyen Han Ward, said: "Though her rapid test for Covid-19 came up negative, she has to be isolated for 21 days.

"The woman refuses to eat and drink, and is making a commotion inside the facility."

Since the latest Covid wave began on April 27, Bac Giang has become a hotspot with 1,881 cases, or more than half the country’s total number.
